Wolverhampton Council's transition team have collected the items, along with gifts and toys, to help people unable to afford gifts for their children.

A total of 150 presents – including toiletries, clothing and stationary – will be handed out to the youngsters before the big day.

Emma Bennett, director of children’s services, said: "Supporting care leavers is a key priority for the council; young people in care have often had a very difficult start to their lives, so it's important that we give them the help they need to make the transition into adulthood.

"We want to ensure this Christmas is a wonderful time of year for our young care leavers and their families and it’s great that colleagues are pulling together in this way. Please support them if you can."

Anyone who wishes to donate should drop off items at Priory Green, Whitburn Close in Pendeford, for the attention of Paige Hunter.

Alternatively, people can donate items at the Civic Centre at St Peter's Square in the city for the attention of Lisa Turner.

The team is looking for gifts for care leavers but will accept items for younger children, as well as donations of wrapping paper, tape and Christmas cards.

It comes as part of Mission Christmas – a campaign by the transition team to provide Christmas cheer to young care leavers.

There will be a Christmas party on December 18 and a Christmas meal on December 28, with a festive feast on offer thanks to a donation from the University of Wolverhampton.
