Councillors back film highlighting domestic abuse
A new film aimed at raising awareness of domestic violence against men – and starring a former University of Wolverhampton student – has been given the backing of two city councillors.
Actor Jet Summan, who trained at the Birmingham School of Acting and then graduated from the university in 2013, appears in the short film Damage, directed by Fernando Antonio Maffei, from Kidderminster.
It is being supported by Wolverhampton councillors Mak Singh and Linda Leach, and is now being shown at select venues across the UK.
In the film, shot in Worcestershire by Bafta-nominated cinematographer Alex Metcalfe, Mr Summan plays Rav, a young man who is trying to find a way out of his abusive relationship with controlling fiance Emma.
Councillor Singh said: “Domestic violence in all forms is abhorrent. People can assume that it’s only women who suffer. However, men can be victims too.
“I’ve met a number of men in the city who have experienced domestic violence, and that’s why I’m keen to support this film and help promote it amongst Wolverhampton communities.
“Domestic violence can be physical or emotional and it’s important for people to talk about it and seek help.”
Councillor Linda Leach, the council’s Cabinet Member for Adults, added: “Whether you’re a man or a woman, being a victim of domestic violence is nothing to be ashamed of. The City of Wolverhampton Council is committed to supporting anyone in this terrible situation, regardless of gender.”
Mr Summan has previously appeared on TV in Birds of a Feather, Holby City, Doctors and a number of high-profile commercials, as well as in the feature film Artichoke.
