The package, which was left in an alleyway off Dudley Street, turned out to be a suitcase which posed no threat, police said.

Officers were called at 2.15pm and closed off part of Dudley Street as a result, as well as the alleyway which runs from next to the old EE shop up to the back of Greggs on Market Street.

A worker at a nearby business said police reported that the package was a silver suitcase which had holes in and was wrapped in tape.

"It was scary, I have never experienced anything like this before," said the worker.

A West Midlands Police spokesman added: "Following inspection, the item was found to be a suitcase which posed no threat."
