Owner Heather Dunlop raised the alarm after she found her cat Percy upside-down in a gap between two neighbouring garages.

Insp Nayman Dunderdale was sent to the home on Wells Road to help free the animal, which was at least six-foot inside the narrow space.

But despite being unable to reach the pet, they managed to free Percy by removing bricks from the wall with help from three builders and neighbours.

Mr Dunderdale said: "Poor Percy was really distressed and constantly crying as we tried to help rescue her.

“It appears that she crawled into the gap at ground level, realised the area was too tight so tried to turn round to come out and in sheer panic ended upside-down which must have been very uncomfortable for her.

“She was really wedged in and couldn’t move at all.

“Thankfully with some teamwork we were able to free her after a two-hour operation.

“She is a larger cat which probably didn’t help so I have advised she maybe needs a bit of a diet and also that the gap needs to be closed off.”

Heather, aged 61, said: "The RSPCA inspector was wonderful, he was so calm and helpful. We are also so grateful to the neighbour who allowed us to remove some bricks to free Percy and they also called the builder to do this, as they had them working on a previous job.

“Percy is so glad to be home - she was a bit quiet for a day or two but is back to her old self and she won’t be getting in the gap again as it has been sealed off.

“It was a real team effort freeing Percy and we just want to thank everyone involved.”
