A dying dog left on the side of the road with “horrifying” injuries has been put to sleep with an urgent appeal now launched to find the owner who abandoned her.

The poor dog has since been put to sleep

The female dog was found in Brinsford Lane, Wolverhampton, by Simon Miles who was out running.

The RSPCA believe the injured pet had been dumped in the area as she was unable to walk.

Mr Miles, aged 40, could see the dog was emaciated and she was struggling to move with a seriously injured left front paw so he alerted the dog warden. He was worried the dog’s condition would deteriorate and stayed with her until help arrived. Mr Miles said: “

The state she was in was very distressing and she was clearly desperate. She couldn’t really move so she couldn’t have got to this area by herself, it was very sad to see.”

The dog warden collected her and she was taken to St George’s Vets in Wolverhampton but because of her poor state of health the vet made the decision to put the dog to sleep.

Vet Stuart Cashmore said: “The wound was horrific, her whole paw was rotting to the bone and it was full of maggots. It appears someone may have tried a home treatment on the dog for a tumour in that area at some point and she was left suffering from that point.”

The RSPCA was alerted to the incident because it is believed the dog had been neglected. As she was not microchipped the animal welfare charity is appealing for information in tracing her owners. Inspector Kate Levesley, who is investigating, said: “

It seems someone had cared for her previously at some point as she was wearing a pink ill-fitting bandage around her wound and a distinctive pink collar. I believe she was probably abandoned as she would have been unable to walk to this area with her wound.”

Anyone who knows who owned this dog or saw anything suspicious in the area is asked to contact the RSPCA appeals line on 0800 123 8018.
