Grandfather John Lees dies days after being brought from Portugal to Wolverhampton
Grandfather John Lees who fell ill while on holiday in Portugal has died, his family have confirmed.
The 81-year-old from Compton, near Wolverhampton, suffered a brain haemorrhage and fell into a coma hours after landing in Madeira with family.
His family launched a #bringjohnhome social media campaign to get Mr Lees back to Wolverhampton after a three-week ordeal trying to arrange his transport and a hospital bed back in the Black Country.
The appeal attracted wide attention with well-wishers and politicians all offering to help.
Much to his family's relief, he was flown back to New Cross Hospital last Thursday where his relatives all gathered round his bedside.
But daughter-in-law Helen Lees confirmed today that Mr Lees had died on Saturday night.
She thanked everyone involved in helping to bring him home.
Mr Lees, whose family described him as a "legend", lived in Wolverhampton all his life.
He owned A&J Tyre Service in Willenhall with his son Andrew and continued visited the business every day despite being 81.
Married to wife Judy for 57 years he had two children and three grandchildren.
