Cycling legend Hugh Porter sticks £20 on Wolves to win the FA Cup
A Wolverhampton sporting legend has put his money where his mouth is - by backing Wolves to lift the FA Cup.
Cycling hero Hugh Porter MBE has bet £20 on Wolves to make history by winning their fifth FA Cup.
Hugh placed his bet after Wolves beat Bristol City 1-0 in their fifth-round clash in February.
The 79-year-old believes Wolves can go all the way and wishes he had lumped the money on earlier in the season.
He said: "I remember seeing odds of 45 to 50/1 when we faced Liverpool in the third round.
"I wish I had put on a bet when the competition started.
"I believe we could go all the way and win it."
Hugh - who won four world titles in the individual pursuit, alongside a Commonwealth Games gold medal - has followed Wolves since he was a boy. He was 20 when Wolves last won the FA Cup, which was in 1960.
They have won the competition a total of four times in their history.
Wolves dispatched Manchester United 2-1 in the quarter-finals - in what was a historic victory under the floodlights of Molineux - as they look to win it a fifth time.
When Hugh placed his bet, Wolves had odds of 9/1 to win the competition.
Now they are second favourites to lift the trophy with odds of 7/2, behind Manchester City.
But first they must face Watford in the semi-finals at Wembley on Sunday.
Hugh said: "I think we can overturn our 2-0 defeat against Watford from the league, at Wembley.
"If we won the competition it would be special and mean so much to the city.
"Everyone in Wolverhampton has got a spring in their heel."
He added: "I had the privilege of being in Wolverhampton's art gallery before the promotion parade march last year, it meant so much to the fans.
"Winning the FA Cup would be special."
