Postman Nick Sawyer decided the time was right to make the engagement official as the couple were in a Greggs in the Mander Centre, Wolverhampton.

They had just been to buy a ring at Warren James next door and Nick decided not to wait a moment longer to pop the question.

And beaming Carolyn, aged 51, made his day by saying yes.

Nick, 61 from Finchfield, said he had considered waiting for a more “appropriate” time to hand over the ring before deciding the time was right.

He said: “We had just been in Warren James next door. We went in Greggs and had a cup of tea. I said do you want to wait for a proper time or do you want it now? I put it on and she was happy.

He added: “I didn’t get down on one knee.”

The couple have been together for two years, having previously lived opposite each other on the same street.

Nick said: “We had talked about it, it was just a case of when it was going to happen. She didn’t want a big party so I said ‘shall I put it on now?’.”

Carloyn said: “We had discussed it but I wasn’t expecting it then. I kept going past the shop and looking and he said ‘come on let’s go in and try one on’. It was emotional.

“We’ve had a tough time and it was something to pick you up. It made us realise you’ve just got to go for it. It was always the plan it was just getting round to it.”
