Firefighters rescue men after 20ft fall down Wolverhampton canal

One of the men was given CPR after 15 firefighters hauled them out of the canal.

Firefighters launched a rescue mission to save three men who fell into a canal in the early hours of this morning.

One man was left unconscious and was rushed to hospital after the trio managed to get trapped within a a canal lock system.

The men were caught 20ft down in the Birmingham Main Line Canal lock off Wolverhampton's Cannock Road, near to the Essar petrol station.

West Midlands Fire Service said the ambulance service alerted them to the incident at about 1.20am on Sunday.

A spokesman said: "Firefighters entered the water and rescued the unconscious male. The other two were assisted using a ladder."

The unconscious man was given CPR at the scene, helping him to breathe again before all three were taken to hospital just after 2am.

The men, who were rescued by a crew of 15, were also suffering from hypothermia, the fire service confirmed.

Firefighters from Fallings Park were assisted by a specialist water crew from Coventry, as well as a Wednesbury-based water rescue team.
