Police and the fire service told Wolverhampton council about the 'substantial' spill on the left-hand carriageway of Millfields Road towards Bilston at about 2.15pm.

The oil is covering the road on the junction with Manor Road and two nearby traffic islands on Coseley Road.

Emergency services are currently dealing with the spillage alongside Wolverhampton council after being alerted at 12.02pm.

Severn Trent Water has also been informed in case any diesel may have run off into water.

Sand is being spread on affected areas in a bid to make it safe. No roads have been closed because of the spillage but police are directing traffic.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said: "We received the call at 12.02pm – the original call was a request from police to attend and assist.

"There was also a request from the council, highways and environmental agency because of the scale.

"The crews are putting a lot of sand down to make it safe.

"The highways agency are spreading bags of sand and waiting on a gritter with more sand.

"It seems the spillage was made worse as it was spread by vehicles.

"We attended with council, police and the highways agency, while environmental agency were informed as well as Severn Trent Water in case of any run-off spillage."
