The posters, saying "we may be new to town but we're not new to coffee. Open soon" have been stuck all over the front of the vacant Dudley Street building, which used to house the Wolves superstore.

But some locals have picked up on the fact that the coffee giant is not exactly 'new' to the city.

PR manager Scott Bird tweeted a picture of the posters and said: "No they’re not new to town, in fact this will be Wolverhampton’s fourth Costa in the city centre! Just what we need, even more paper cup waste."

Costa already has outlets in the nearby Mander Centre and next to the bus station on Pipers Row, as well as a recently-opened drive-thru shop on Stafford Road.

The Dudley Street store plan to open on weekdays and Saturdays from 6.30am to 8pm, and 8am to 6.30pm on Sundays.

Wolves decided to close their merchandise shop when its lease expired in June, and the shop has sat empty ever since. Bosses said the reason they closed was due to more sales online and the 'general decline of high street shopping'.

The club is now focusing just on the Molineux Megastore.

Costa Coffee has not yet been able to confirm when their new shop will open.
