Emergency services rushed to Kent Road just before 1am this morning after a neighbour heard a disturbance.

UPDATE:

The girl remains critically ill in hospital, while the man, who is related to the young girl, is in hospital for treatment to a cut hand.

Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the stabbing.

The house has been cordoned off while forensic experts examine the scene.

A woman in her 80s suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder during the incident and is being treated in hospital.

The woman is believed to be the girl's grandmother, who ran out into the street to get help in the early hours of the morning.

One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said she saw the woman wearing a dressing gown run into the street as others tried to calm her down before she was taken to hospital.

A local shopkeeper, 67-year-old Natu Patel, added: "I see the little girl everyday, she is like a daughter to me.

“She loves coming in to see us and makes us things little pictures to keep in the shop.

“I just can’t believe it. Why her? She is just so young.

“We have only just found out and we are deeply shocked.”

Distressing

Superintendent Harvi Khatkar, from Wolverhampton police, said: “This is an extremely distressing incident and we are working to establish exactly what has happened.

"We fully understand the impact that this will have on the community.

“But we do believe this is an isolated incident, and we are not looking for anyone else.

“Extra officers will be out patrolling the area to offer reassurance to residents.”

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “Ambulance staff and MERIT arrived to find an 11-year-old girl inside a property with multiple serious injuries.

"The girl was in a critical condition and ambulance staff worked quickly as a team to administer life-saving trauma care on scene before she was taken by land ambulance on blue lights to hospital; the doctor travelled with the ambulance crew to continue vital treatment en route.

“An elderly woman was also assessed and treated on scene after suffering less serious injuries before being taken to hospital for further checks.”

Anyone with information has been asked to contact police on 101, quoting log 77 of February 9.
