Club celebrates 50 not out in 60s style

The swinging Sixties came alive at the Old Wulfrunians Club base on Castlecroft Road on Friday when members past and present reunited to celebrate half a century of sport and community.

The Old Wulfrunians Club opened it club house on September 1 1967.

Previously, the original members met in rooms above Barclays Bank in Queen Square, Wolverhampton.

The group was eventually able to commission the the building of a purpose-built new clubhouse on the sports ground owned by the club after raising £20,000.

50 years on and the club is now home to cricket and football teams of all age groups, with a newly-formed snooker team playing indoors.

The club started as a way for former members of Wolverhampton Grammar School to continue their relationships through sports and over time became a key part of the community in Tettenhall.

On Friday, former and current members met to celebrate the club house's birthday, donning their best 1960s garb as part of the theme for the special evening.

Natalie Downham, current manager of the club, said: "Tonight is a chance for us to see some of our older members who can't get down every week and for our newer members to learn more about the history of this club.

"The club has really lasted the test of time and I think that is because we create a real family atmosphere.

"People who play for our teams tend to bring their kids in when they are old enough to play and it gets passed down like that.

"I think it is amazing that the vision the original members had all of those years ago is still going strong, we have been quite lucky in that sense.

"The closeness that everyone shares has really helped in times of hardship over the years and we are still going strong today, so I think all of our members past and present deserve thanks."

The club currently boasts football, cricket and snooker teams.
