A jury at Kingston Crown Court reached its verdict this week and a judge sentenced him to 100 hours community service.

The burglary took place at a flat on May 15 last year.

Crown Prosecution Service spokesman, David Lindsell, confirmed the 41-year-old's conviction and that he must now also pay costs of £1,500 and a £85 victim surcharge.

In March this year Newton, who is understood to live in the capital, was the subject of a wanted appeal issued by London’s Metropolitan Police after he failed to turn up to court in October.

Newton had joined Wolves from Charlton Athletic for £1 million in 2001.

He soon became a regular and played in the side that beat Sheffield United 3-0 in the play-off final in Cardiff two years later, which saw Wolves promoted to the Premier League.

Newton stayed with Dave Jones’ side in the top flight, playing 32 times in the 2003/04 season.

In total he played 151 times for Wolves in total, scoring 13 goals, before leaving for Premier League side West Ham in 2005.
