A group of around eight caravans set up camp on Windsor Playing Fields, at the rear of Warstones Primary School in Wolverhampton, at around 4pm on Wednesday afternoon.

Police officers attended that evening and moved the group on only for them to relocate a stone's throw away beside Warstones Library.

For several hours there was a large police presence in the area with police vans blocking three separate entrances to Windsor Playing Fields.

But it is thought that when the police left some of the travellers moved from the open space next to Warstones Library and returned to the playing fields.

A total of around 24 caravans were on the site on Thursday afternoon.

A resident of nearby Pinfold Lane, who overlooks the park asked not to be named, said: "We have never had this before here.

"On Wednesday evening they were racing around the fields and now the fields look like a complete mess.

"They were racing their cars as well up and down the roads travelling at very high speeds."

A spokesman for Wolverhampton council, said: "We have been made aware of the situation and we have been in constant contact with the police.

"Officers have visited the site yesterday morning and have done the relevant checks to establish the extent of the issue."

A spokesman for West Midlands Police, said in the first instance the travellers were a matter for the council, who it would support as necessary.

Councillor Alan Bolshaw, who represents the area, said: "I am satisfied that the authority will work with the necessary speed to assure the problem is dealt with swiftly."

The travellers arrived on the same day several groups were evicted by police from land in Dudley.

Travellers moved onto playing fields near Withymoor Primary School and also set up camp on a field by a One Stop convenience store in Brierley Hill on Tuesday night.

A group had already set up camp on Withymoor Park on Thursday.

Dudley Council and West Midlands Police carried out an eviction on Wednesday.
