But Mike Hall found himself delivering a baby when his team were flagged down in traffic driving through Wolverhampton to help a mother-to-be in distress.

And it all went smoothly as Mr Hall said he drew on his experience of watching television dramas like Call the Midwife and Holby City to help.

The team from West Midlands Police had been busy filming for a television show Crimewatch Roadshow and helping uncover a £700,000 cannabis farm earlier in the day.

WATCH: It was all in a day's work

They were stuck in traffic at Hickman Avenue when they were stopped by someone running up to the van.

Mr Hall said: “They said that their friend was having a baby. We didn’t realise how urgently she was having it until we got over to the car.

“She was obviously in loads of pain with a look of worry on her face.

“We just about had time to put some blankets around the car to preserve her dignity, then, essentially, the baby started to come out.

"I put some gloves on and caught it because it came out quicker than I imagined it would. I made sure the baby was breathing, warmed it up a bit, gave it to the mother and that was it, a little baby in the world.”

“We do first aid and trauma training for our job, but nothing for this kind of eventuality. I was just drawing on all the episodes of Holby City and Call the Midwife that I’d seen in the past.”

He added: “The mother is now doing fine in hospital, the baby girl was a bit premature but she’s also doing well.
