The Peel Centre was devastated by a severe blaze started by arsonists back in 2011.

Now, the JD Gyms chain has been granted planning permission to convert Unit 1, formerly the JJB Sports shop, into a gym.

It is investing £2 million into the site off Stafford Street, creating 19 full-time jobs.

Alun Peacock, managing director of JD Gyms, said: “We’re incredibly excited to be bringing a low cost gym with a difference to Wolverhampton.

“Discount memberships will be available prior to opening later this year.”

The company currently has 10 gyms around the country, including one in Birmingham, Coventry and Liverpool.

The news comes hot on the heels of major discount chain store, Home Bargains, opening its doors for business at the Peel Centre earlier this month.

The store opened its doors on June 10, with shoppers spotted queuing all the way down Stafford Street to get inside.

Councillor John Reynolds, cabinet member for city economy, said: “It is great to see new occupants moving onto this retail park.

“It is another example of the £3.7 billion of investment currently on site or in the pipeline across the city as part of regeneration plans.

“It brings with it vital job opportunities for the people of Wolverhampton and shows the city is on the up.”

Ninder Johal, board member of the Black Country LEP said: “This is absolutely fantastic news for the city that such a big brand has decided to bring one of its newest ventures into Wolverhampton.

“This shows that the city is a thriving place where people can live, work and play.”

Following the fire of 2011, only one firm, United Carpets and Beds, continued to trade from there. Flames ripped through the 80,000sq ft building fuelled by tens of thousands of pounds worth of furniture. It sent plumes of black some into the skyline.
