Keepmoat Homes Ltd have been chosen by Walsall Council to deliver the first phase of the Willenhall Framework Plan, which will see 106 new homes built at Moat Street and Villiers Street along with highways improvements.

Walsall Council’s deputy leader Adrian Andrew said people in the town had been ‘let down’ many times in the past but had reason to look forward to a better future.

Earlier this year, the authority was awarded £20 million in Levelling Up Fund cash which will help deliver Phase One of the plan.

A total of 40 empty properties have been identified by the council to be acquired through compulsory purchase order powers, although it is still hoped they can be bought through negotiation with owners.

The decision to approve the appointment of Keepmoat Homes Ltd was taken, in private session, by members of Walsall Council’s cabinet on Wednesday.

Councillor Andrew said: “This is a huge step and a milestone in terms of redeveloping and regenerating and giving a new lease of life to Willenhall town centre particularly.

“There are many derelict buildings across Willenhall that we can deal with and by taking these sites and bringing them back into economic use, it’s another step towards protecting our green belt.

“The appointment of this partner will make that an easier task and something that is deliverable for the people of Willenhall.

“The people of Willenhall have been let down time and time again, and with the new railway station and with this particular process of redeveloping derelict sites, Willenhall can have a firm eye on the future as well as having a proud past.”

Council leader Mike Bird added: “Adrian grew up in Willenhall so he’s passionate about it. We welcome the report and the effort he has put in over the years is now coming into fruition.

“Also the £20 million recently announced by Government for Darlaston quite genuinely regenerate that area as well.

“The Willenhall and Darlaston stations will of course connect people from their into the Black Country and also into Birmingham.”
