The Ruby family from New Invention were inspired to begin collecting for a school's food bank after receiving a letter from their son Craig's school, Beacon Primary School.

The letter said it was starting the foodbank to help families of pupils attending the school who were struggling due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Kim and Shane Ruby decided to act and made a donation of two trollies worth of food from their local Lidl to the food bank.

Kim, who runs Slimming World groups at two venues in the community, said they decided to help as they understand the difficulties faced by families.

She said: ""Understanding the difficulties faced by local families and knowing that, at Slimming World, I support members to lose weight eating themselves slim, I wanted to support such a great cause.

"Don't get me wrong, we've not had it easy during the pandemic either as I was made redundant from my main job after 19 years with the company, but we realise we are more fortunate than some.

"We just wanted to give another family peace of mind and maybe a good nights sleep knowing there cupboards are stocked for a little bit"

Her husband Shane said: "I was furloughed for just five weeks during the first lockdown but I've been fortunate enough that I was able to return to work and have worked throughout the second Lockdown.

"I can’t imagine how hard some of these families have had it, so if we can help out, to take away some of the pressures this Christmas, then that leaves me feeling like I've spread the Christmas spirit this year"
