The fire in Short Heath is thought to have involved around 1,000 tons of recycling waste and pallets, with the black smoke from it visible across the Black Country and beyond.

Ten fire crews were sent to fight the blaze at Alvar Business Park, off Ezekiel Lane, and pumped water out of a nearby canal while dousing the flames from above via aerial platforms.

The blaze started at around 12.30pm on Tuesday and four fire engines remained at the scene at 6pm as the fire continued to burn.

The smoke could be seen as far away as Cannock, Sutton Coldfield, Bilston and Tividale.

West Midlands Fire Service warned nearby residents to keep doors and windows closed and West Midlands Police were also at the scene where nearby roads were closed.
