Pensioner killed in BMW hit-and-run horror is named by police
A pensioner has died after being hit by a BMW whose driver fled the scene when the car flipped on its roof.
John Hickinbottom, aged 74, was hit by the black car on Bentley Road North at the traffic island leading to Bentley Table.
Passers-by tried to help the victim, who is from Willenhall, but he died three days later.
A man aged 29 has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and released pending further investigation.
The crash happened at 2.30pm last Friday as the victim walked towards Darlaston.
He was taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital, but today police revealed he had died on Monday.
Sgt Alan Wood from the Regional Collision investigation Unit, said: “The black BMW overturned during the collision and came to rest on its roof.
"The occupants of the car then left the scene.
"Investigations are on-going but we are asking for any witnesses who have not already come forward to contact us.”
He added, “A number of witnesses stopped at the scene and attempted to assist Mr Hickinbottom before emergency services arrived, they have also supplied valuable information about the circumstances of the collision, but I would encourage anyone else who may have information about the incident to come forward.”
A family statement said: "John Hickinbottom was a very kind, loving and caring man. He was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. His loss has devastated the whole family.”
