Victory in battle for post office bins

A battle to get litter bins outside Darlaston Post Office is over - with the bins set to be installed by the end of the month.

Residents and area councillor Doug James have long been lobbying Walsall Council to get litter bins installed outside the town's post office and have now been told they will be put in place before May 31.

The site is one of the busiest venues in Darlaston but has never had litter bins in front, resulting in rubbish piling up at times.

The installation of the bins comes after a petition was handed in to council bosses asking that they be put in place.

Prabdail Singh Badhan, who runs the post office, said he was delighted with the success of the petition.

He said: "We want to help keep our town tidy and we are delighted that Walsall Council is supporting local business too."

Councillor Doug James, who led the petition and campaign, has previously said that GS3 litter enforcement teams who work on behalf of the council to battle littering in Walsall are rarely seen in the Darlaston area, with a greater focus put on the town centre.

Councillor James said: "This has been a long story.

"The owner of the post office came to me in desperation with the lack of support he had received from others.

"We have both turned it around by working together and its great news for everyone at Darlaston Post Office.

"GS3 litter enforcement teams have rarely been seen over months in Darlo town centre. "They can give out penalty tickets but we would prefer new bins, new bins would be here all the time.

"I have been told that they will be put in place before the end of the month and I am delighted with that.

“Darlaston Post Office and customers deserve better and hopefully this is a step in the right direction."
