Developer Sukhjit Khera has put forward plans to demolish the old Wheel Inn pub on Lindon Road and replace it with a retail unit and 10 one and two bedroom apartments on the site.

Mr Khera bought the building after the business closed and said there were at least half a dozen other pubs in the area, adding the new development would enhance the area.

Walsall Council’s planning officers are currently considering the proposal and are expected to make a decision in the new year.

There have been previous plans put forward for the site, such as one for 14 flats submitted last year, but these were not progressed.

Agent Master Design Studio said: “The Wheel Inn ceased trading prior it was bought by our client over ten years ago, and now will not make any impact on the local residents, instead the new proposed development would enhance the area and create new jobs.

“Within one mile radius there are 6 existing pubs in the area, which provide the same and better atmosphere for the users.

The existing facilities in the area are Anchor Inn, The Royal Exchange, Black Cock, The Royal Oak, Boatman Rest and Drunken Duck

“The proposal is for demolition of the existing building and erection of new mixed-use block which comprises of retail unit on the ground floor and No. 10 residential self-contained flats residential flats on the first and second floor.

The building has been designed in keeping with the massing of the building to the surrounding.

“The accommodation comprises ground floor retail unit 278sqm. The first floor comprises of five flats of which two are two bedroom each and three one bedroom and repeats the same on the second floor with private amenity and twenty car parking spaces with external bins storage area and plant room

located at the rear of the unit together with load bay.

“The front and the rear façade of the building is proposed to be finished in mixed red bricks and smooth white render in keeping and to match with the surrounding. The entrance to the retail unit would be off the Lindon Road with large, glazed area.”
