West Midlands Collision Investigators are looking into what happened and are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash, or who saw the VW Golf travelling nearby earlier, to contact police.

Sergeant Alan Wood, from West Midlands Police, said: “This is a tragic incident; paramedics attempted CPR on the driver at the scene but it was apparent there was nothing that could be done to save his life.

“We are working to explain exactly what happened and led the vehicle to leave the road.

"At this stage we believe there were no other vehicles involved but we’d like to hear from anyone who saw what happened.”

Dozens of floral tributes have been laid at the scene, with debris from the collision still embedded in the roots of the tree. The pavement remains littered with tree branches and a sign has been put up calling for people with information to report it to the police.

Anyone who saw the collision, or who was in the area at the time and saw the silver VW Golf in the build-up, is asked to call the West Midlands Police Collision Investigation Unit on 101 or email fl_ collision _invest@west-midlands.pnn.police.uk quoting log 3370 20/10.
