With temperatures in parts of the Black Country expected to hit 28C (82.4F) this week, parents have criticised the decision on Facebook.

There have been calls for the splash pads to be left open longer.

An announcement made on the Walsall Arboretum Facebook page yesterday said: "Please be advised that our Splash Pads are now closed for the year, marking the end of another splash-tastic season. But don't worry, we'll be back next season!"

But this was met with a flurry of complaints left underneath the post.

Linda Mason said: "In this weather should leave it open longer."

Karen Stokes said: "Surely you could extend for one week as it’s such nice weather and not all children have returned to school yet."

Claire Harbun also wrote: "It’s crazy how early in the year these are closed. Please reconsider! My kids aren’t back at school until Thursday and so many pre-schoolers would benefit from extending the opening dates."
