More than 1,000 fines dished out to parents for poor parking outside Walsall schools
More than 1,000 fines were dished out to parents for poor parking outside Walsall schools in just one term.
Walsall Council bosses have vowed to tackle dangerous parking around school gates which is an issue across the borough with new powers from the Government set to come into effect shortly.
A members’ working group was set up to focus solely on school gate parking and a series of findings and recommendations presented to cabinet.
Councillor Pete Smith, independent member for Blakenall ward, had tabled a question at a full council earlier this month about progress on implementing recommendations but was unable to as time had run out.
But he has instead received a written response from Councillor Kerry Murphy, cabinet member for Street Pride, who said a raft of measures are being put in place.
This included routine enforcement of double yellow lines and ‘school keep clear’ markings which saw more than 1,000 parking charge notices being issued.
The Department for Transport also confirmed Walsall Council has been granted moving traffic enforcement powers at a number of locations across the borough where CCTV will be used to catch those flouting traffic laws.
