Costa Coffee drive-thru plan for Walsall Morrisons
A new drive-thru Costa Coffee shop could be opened on the car park of a Black Country supermarket.
A proposal has been put forward to Walsall Council planners to create the new facility on the car park of Morrisons’ Wallows Lane store.
A total of 15 new jobs will be created at the new Costa, which would be situated near the entrance opposite the existing petrol station, if the plan is given the go-ahead.
The development would result in 46 car parking spaces being lost, leaving a total of 400 for shoppers.
In the application, architects Whittam Cox said: “The site layout has been driven by a desire to rejuvenate under used areas of the WM Morrisons existing car park.
“By incorporating a complementary use which can not only support linked trips but is also a strong enough brand that it can operate independently of the superstore.
“The proposed location within the car park is such that it will minimise disruption to the existing car park operation and minimal parking spaces will be lost.
“The proposed development will result in the loss of parking spaces within the store car park.
“A car park accumulation survey has taken place of the store car park that demonstrates that the remaining car park has sufficient capacity for the current use of the store and the anticipated use of the drive-thru coffee shop.
“The proposed drive-thru coffee shop will be constructed to a high standard and incorporates a café seating area, serving and back of house areas.
“With an outdoor seating area providing additional seating space. A wrap around drive-thru lane provides access for cars to be served from a serving hatch to the rear of the building
“The scheme seeks to revitalise the existing WM Morrisons car park by offering more choice to customers and generating new employment opportunities through the provision of a new drive-thru coffee shop.
“WM Morrisons hope that the advantages of this proposal as well as the overall benefits to the local community will be supported.”
