Christmas Day babies welcomed into world at Black Country hospital

The first baby who was born today at Walsall Manor Hospital was Freddie Jay Luke Paddock, who arrived at 12.16am.

His proud parents are Katie Lynn and Daniel Paddock.

Katie, aged 21, who is a carer, said: "I was worried at first because I wanted my mum at the birth too but because of Covid I could only have one birth partner.

"I didn’t need to worry though as the midwives have been fantastic with us, so kind, and Daniel was great.

"We’re hoping to go home today but need to be observed a bit longer yet.

"It does feel special to know that Freddie is the first Christmas Day baby this year."

By 1pm, four Christmas Day babies were born at the hospital.

Also celebrating were proud parents Aleshia Skitt and James Smith, from Pelsall.

Aleshia gave birth to their second child, Elliott, at 3.40am, weighing seven pounds and 12 ounces.

Elliott was due last Saturday, on December 19, but arrived early this morning.

Their eldest son Jacob, seven, was enjoying Christmas at his grandparents.

Elliott's father James, 30, a high voltage electrical and civil engineer, said: "He’s loving the attention, so we know he’s happy.

"I'm pleased that I’m able to stay here with Alicia, as she has had a c-section and is recovering from that.

"It’s definitely a Christmas to remember."

A socially-distanced Santa handed over a gift to both parents from the hospital's Well Wishers charity.

The hospital congratulated all the parents and thanked the midwives for their support.
