Walsall Council planning officers are considering the proposal to bring down the existing shop at James Bridge Service Station to replace it with a new retail unit and forecourt featuring three pump islands plus space for parking.

Plans to replace the existing facility were approved back in 2019 but the applicants have since amended the proposal which is now back for consideration.

In the application, Adcock Associates said: “James Bridge Service Station is an established petrol filling station that has been in use as such since at least 1988.

“The existing forecourt shop building incorporates a café and a garage facility, and the existing site also includes a hand car wash. The Service Station currently trades 24 hours.

“The proposal is to demolish the existing forecourt shop building, forecourt, and car wash facilities, which are in a dilapidated condition, and construct a new modern shop building and forecourt.

“The new building will be longer but lower than the existing, making it closer in scale to the domestic properties on the opposite side of Short Street. The HGV forecourt will remain as existing.

“The redevelopment is unlikely to have a significant impact on the surrounding area and its design is to be of a quality reflecting the existing appearance and policies are in place that prevent the introduction of harmful, incongruous or intrusive elements by reason of the development’s siting, scale, form, colour or use of materials.

“The development will have a positive effect on the character of the locality and accords with the principals of sustainable development and the policies for regeneration.”
