Walsall charity walk raises more than £500
Community spirited residents donned fancy dress and took to the streets of a Walsall estate to help raise much-needed cash for charity.
More than £500 was collected on Saturday (August 22) for the Residents R Us group when dozens of people walked around the Beechdale in a range of different outfits.
Residents R US was formed around a decade ago by people living in the area with the aim of supporting those in need, particularly OAPs and youngsters.
But the charity, which relies purely on donations, has run out of money to continue its work as a result of Covid pressures and so the event was organised to give them a timely boost.
Ward councillor Gaz Ali, who supported the event, added it was also a chance to inject a bit of fun as people continue to deal with the coronavirus lockdown.
On the day, the participants gathered £182.90 during the 90-minute event to add to the £336 raised through sponsorship – giving a total of £518.90.
Group chairwoman Sue Lycett thanked Councillor Ali and his Tory colleague Amo Hussain for their support.
She added: “All money raised from the event will go to our community. Our motto is ‘together we can, together we will’.
“We work so hard with no funding and have just the dedication from members of the group. I thank everyone from the bottom of my heart.
Councillor Ali added: “We wanted to do something different to cheer up our community and raise funds for Residents R Us.
“They are a local group that has been supporting the local community for 10 years by organising trips, sewing classes, bingo nights, fun days, coffee mornings and recently supported local elderly flood victims.
“They are in desperate need of funds to survive so we decided to organise this walk and it was a great day and atmosphere full of fun and cheers.”
