Three months on, staff and volunteers at the store on Crown Wharf Retail Park, in Walsall are now getting back to business to tackle a shortfall in funding.

With its shops typically contributing more than £25m every year to vital research, Cancer Research UK has suffered a dramatic loss of income since they were forced to close temporarily at the end of March.

Lucas proudly cut the ribbon at the opening of the Midlands first Cancer Research UK superstore in September 2018.

The Alumwell Junior School pupil was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2013 and has been shielding with his family throughout the Covid-19 lockdown.

His mother Michelle said: “Opening the new Cancer Research UK superstore was a highlight for Lucas.

“He was photographed, filmed and interviewed for radio. He felt like a VIP, posing with the giant scissors.” The shop is open 10am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, and 11am to 4pm on Sundays.
