Severn Trent had warned that repairs would take at least a month to complete after the four-metre wide and three-metre deep hole opened up in Stafford Street on May 21 when one of its sewers collapsed.

But now the company has said the repair has gone well.

A spokesman for Severn Trent said: "The repair’s gone very smoothly, we’ve got a new piece of sewer pipe in place, and we’re hopeful we’ll be able to reopen the road ahead of schedule.

"We’d like to thank everyone for their patience while we’ve been carrying out the work."
