Driver escapes serious injury in high-speed bus crash in Walsall town centre

A driver escaped serious injury as his car was wrecked in a high-speed crash with a bus in Walsall town centre.

Dramatic photos from the scene show the aftermath of the crash which happened Newport Street shortly at around midnight on Monday.

The Audi car involved can be seen with major front-end damage on the zebra crossing next to the cenotaph while the rear driver's side of the bus was also damaged.

Debris from the Audi and single-decker National Express bus was left scattered over the mini-roundabout at the junction of Bradford Street and Bridgemnan Street.

The male driver of the car was freed by firefighters and was said to have suffered only minor injuries. He was taken to hospital for further assessment.

The West Midlands Police Force Response Twitter account said he had been reported for not having any insurance.

Firefighters from West Bromwich were sent to the scene along with police and paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service.

A spokesman from West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 11.53pm on Sunday night to reports of a road traffic collision on Newport Street. One ambulance and a paramedic officer attended the scene.

"On arrival crews discovered one patient, a man, who was the driver of the car. He was treated for minor injuries at the scene before being taken to Walsall Manor Hospital for further assessment."

Sharing the crash on social media, West Midlands Police's force response team, said: "We have dealt with a collision in Walsall town centre. An Audi drove into the rear of a bus and caused extensive damage to both vehicles.

"Luckily there’s only been minor injuries. The Audi driver had no insurance and will be reported for summons. "
