New takeaway set for Walsall Arcade
A new takeaway and cafe is set to open in Walsall town centre after a proposal was given the green light by planners.
Applicant Chya Mustapha wants to convert the existing shop on Bradford Street, which forms part of the historic Victorian Arcade, into the hot food takeaway and eat in shop.
He is currently in talks with the precinct owners about his proposal but he has been given a boost after Walsall Council planning officers granted permission for the scheme.
The authority also granted listed building consent for the change as the 19th century Arcade is classed as having special architectural interest.
Mr Mustapha said the new takeaway will provide a boost for the town centre and create jobs in the process.
In the application, agents Planning Service said: “The Victorian Arcade, which the applicant shop is a part of, is identified as part of the ‘primary shopping area’ in the Walsall Town Centre area action plan.
“This identification means that the role of this area is protected as a shopping destination and all activities and features of the Arcade should promote this.
“This includes the promotion of healthy and appropriate businesses to create affluence and good economy.
“The proposal applied for would be in keeping with the above policy in promoting eateries in town centres, create new jobs and be good for businesses with influence to positive competition.
“As the shop front will be made good and in keeping with it’s history, the proposal will be fitting in the street scene creating no prejudice to the functions of the surrounding shops.”
