Fryers Road Household Waste Recycling Centre in Bloxwich was closed to the public on Friday after smoke was spotted in the dry mixed recycling.

It is expected to be back open as normal on Saturday.

More than a dozen firefighters doused about 30 tons of recycling and moved about five tons of waste outside.

The fire service returned later in the afternoon and checked the area with a thermal imaging camera.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service explained: "At 12.21pm we had a 999 call. We sent two crews from Walsall and one from Bloxwich.

"The first engine got to the scene in under four minutes.

"The stop message came through at 1.36pm, it was a fire involving mixed recycling waste.

"Approximately five tons of waste have been removed from the internal storage bay and moved to the external yard.

"We used two hose-reel jets on the blaze.

"We revisited the site at 4pm and we used a thermal imaging camera to check for heat and smoke and there was no sign of fire."

A spokesman for Walsall Council said: "Smoke was detected in dry mixed recycling delivered to the Fryer’s Road Transfer Station today.

"As a precautionary measure, the fire service was called and the household waste recycling area of the site was closed to the public.

"Around 30 tons of dry mixed recycling (of the 90 tons delivered today) was doused and the fire service attended later in the day to confirm no further action was required.

"The Household Waste Recycling Centre is scheduled to be open to the public as normal on Saturday."
