The Independent Saddlers Supporters Group have been transporting Chris Nicholl to home games, as he is living with dementia.

The group decided to raise funds for the assisted living home of Mr Nicholl and held an event at The Railway Club in Walsall on Friday evening.

The night featured three entertainers, an auction and Mr Nicholl gave a speech and signed autographs.

Chris Nicholl became the manager of Walsall FC early in the 1994-95 season and they were promoted from Division Three as runners-up and quit in May 1997.

Earlier on the same day the group received a cash donation from workers and players at the club.

Dave Beckett, chairman of the group, said: "The event went really well, we raised £3,048.

"It will all go to the home of Chris.

"The first thing it will pay for it a Christmas party and entertainment for all the residents there.

"We'll then identify things to help them on a day-to-day basis until the funds are exhausted.

"It was a night in Chris's honour. All Walsall fans came together and we had three different singers, one also did an Elvis tribute.

"The place sold out, we had 150 people there.

"Chris was signing autographs and made a short speech and he thoroughly enjoyed it.

"We can't thank the people enough who sponsored the event and the fans who came."
