Buses displaying wrong fares after increase

Bus passengers were left confused after adverts on the side of buses displayed old fares days after prices increased.

Michael Baker noticed that an advert on the side of a National Express bus in Walsall was stating the Walsall Low Fare Zone Day Saver ticket was £3 - until he was told by the driver the fare had increased days earlier.

The 62-year-old was told he had to pay £3.50 for the ticket instead.

A spokeswoman for National Express West Midlands said the bus adverts will not be changed in their entirety until early this week - a week after the fares changed.

Mr Baker, from Short Heath, said: "It's sort of backstabbing the public.

"I think a 50p increase is pretty reasonable but if people turn up with £3 they might get turned away."

The National Express West Midlands spokeswoman said: "The Walsall Low Fare Zone adult day ticket was changed from £3 to £3.50 from January 2 2019. Ahead of our fares changes details were published online and included on posters on board our vehicles.

"There has been a delay in changing some of the fares stickers on our vehicles and we apologise for any confusion caused. The majority of the existing sticker updates will be completed on Friday evening, with the remainder completed early this week. Details of all our fares changes are available on our website nxbus.co.uk."
