The inquest on 19-year-old Alex Lees and 18-year-old Tarik Campbell was opened at Black Country Coroner’s Court yesterday, with both families in attendance.

The friends, both from Walsall, died on March 13 after a crash at about 11.35pm on Broadway West.

Tarik Campbell was the pillion passenger on the motorcycle

Assistant coroner Emma Serrano heard that student Alex had ridden his black Suzuki GSF 600 motorbike to pick up restaurant assistant Tarik from the end of his McDonald’s shift before the tragedy occurred.

Alex, the registered keeper of the bike, was driving with Tarik as the pillion passenger along Broadway West, when a red Rover car travelling in the opposite direction turned right and the bike hit the side of the vehicle.

The driver was arrested and produced a positive breath test.

The inquest was adjourned for three months so police investigations can continue and a review hearing will take place on June 12.
