Physiotherapist by day, boxer by night
A hospital worker is gearing up to take part in a charity boxing night next month.
Physiotherapist at Walsall Manor Hospital Jonathan Hope is being trained and mentored by IBF Super Lightweight Champion Martin Gethin.
He is one of a series of amateur boxers lining up to take part in the Well Wishers charity match at Rushall Labour Club on August 11.
The 37-year-old whose favourite boxers are George Groves and Anthony Joshua, said: “I wanted to do it last year when the charity held a similar event but I was a bit too late.
“But this time round I’m better prepared. It doesn’t get any better than working with Martin Gethin as I’m learning so much from him at his Wild Star Boxing Gym.
"That said, I’m learning from lots of people who go there. The other night a 15-year-old was giving me tips, he was telling me to keep my elbows in and I’ve really concentrated on that.
“It’s for a good cause, our Well Wishers charity, and I must admit I’ve really enjoyed the training. I don’t think I’m unfit particularly as I don’t drink or smoke, but this is a different type of fitness. I’ve never had a fight in my life but I can see how the training and the concentration required can help you release your stress and really focus.”
The charity boxing match is raising funds towards improvements for elderly and vulnerable patients, including those living with dementia, who are treated at Walsall Manor Hospital.
Mr Hope's colleagues are right behind his training, even if they have teased him about one of his vices.
Physiotherapist Sophie Brown who works with him at Bentley Health Centre, said: “He does like a McDonald’s – and I don’t mean the salad!”
Fundraising manager at Walsall Healthcare Trust Georgie Westley has teamed up with Gethin to organise the event which follows on from a hugely successful one last year.
And she is hoping local businesses will throw their weight behind the match and help out with sponsorship.
Tickets are now on sale and cost £10 to include a buffet meal. They are on sale at the Purple Hub opposite Route 003 outpatients at Walsall Manor Hospital.
