Walsall hit and run: Inquest opens into pensioner

An inquest has opened on a pensioner who was hit by a BMW whose driver fled the scene when the car flipped on its roof.

John Hickinbottom, aged 74, from Lilac Grove, Walsall, was hit by the black car on Bentley Road North near to the junction of Hanover Court on June 9.

The retired builder was taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he died three days later.

Russ Williams, senior coroners officer, said: "The vehicle lost control and mounted the pavement hitting a pedestrian before colliding with a lamppost causing the car to overturn.

"A cause of death is still yet to be ascertained."

A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, but was later released pending further investigation.

Sergeant Alan Wood from the Regional Collision investigation Unit, said: “Our criminal investigation is dependant on the pathology evidence and an accident reconstruction which is yet to take place.

"The suspect has been interviewed but no further progress can be made until we get a formal cause of death."

Senior Coroner Zafar Siddique adjourned the inquest until September 4.

In a family statement issued after Mr Hickinbottom's death, he was described as a 'kind, loving and caring' father, grandfather and great grandfather.
