Driver admits speeding in crash which killed teenager
A speeding motorist who was involved in a collision which killed a teenage cyclist has been given a driving ban after escaping more serious charges.
Stephan Russell, aged 26 and from Wood Lane in Streetly, was behind the wheel of a Kia Rio when it struck 18-year-old Daniel Horton who was riding is mountain bike in the road shortly after midnight on September 16 last year.
After a collision investigation by West Midlands Police Russell was found to have been travelling at 44mph along the Chester Road in Streetly which has a speed limit of 30mph at the spot where the accident took place.
The force has said due to the complexity of the investigation the driver could only be charged with speeding and not a more serious offences such as causing death by dangerous driving.
Russell pleaded guilty at Walsall Magistrates Court on Wednesday. He was given a nine-month disqualification, six penalty points and a bill of £465 in fines and costs.
Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes from the Collision Investigation Unit said: "This has been an extremely complex investigation and following lengthy consultation with the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) these charges were brought.
"I fully understand some people may question the nature of the charges. It was a tough decision for all those involved but given the evidence that was available this was the most appropriate charge.
"It is a tragic incident where a much-loved teenager has lost his life.
"No sentence will ever bring Daniel back and I would like to thank his family for their support through this traumatic time. My thoughts remain with them as they try come to terms with their loss."
Shortly after the crash Daniel's family confirmed he was an organ donor.
In a statement they said: "We are heartbroken to lose our Dan was confident, caring, funny, and loved by everyone he met.
"We are proud to know that as an organ donor this devastating situation will help others."
