Call to help palliative patients in Walsall

A call has gone out to businesses in Walsall who may be able to dig deep and help improve the quality of life for patients receiving palliative care.

Staff at Walsall’s Palliative Care Centre and Fair Oaks Day Hospice, which is part of Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, say there is a decked patio area but it is plain and empty and they’d like to see it have a makeover.

Tracey Grinell, clinical nurse manager at the day hospice, said it was important for patients and their carers to be able to enjoy the garden area and is hoping that it could be adopted as a project by a willing business or organisation.

She said: “We have some fantastic events here at Fair Oaks Day Hospice and want to make better use of the environment as the palliative care centre is in such a peaceful, relaxing setting.

“While we have got a decked area and some old patio furniture we could really do with some colourful plants and pots or other features to really brighten up the area and make it much more attractive.

"We will be looking at making it a fundraising project but thought it would be worth asking if there are any local businesses or groups which would be willing to transform it for us so we can concentrate our fundraising in other areas.

“Our patients are receiving palliative care which means they have been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness and it is so important to make their final weeks, months or years as comfortable and memorable as possible.

"The garden is also an important feature for their carers and families to be able to use.”
