Winnick questions if public think politicians are 'all greedy'?

George Osborne has defended his appointment as London Evening Standard editor, insisting Parliament is "enhanced" when people of different experience take part.

However, Mr Winnick has spoke out over Mr Osborne taking on the role in the House of Commons, saying that MPs have to be careful not to allow the controversial move to affect their reputation.

Speaking in the House of Commons, the MP, who has been in his position for 50 years, spoke of repairing MPs reputation after the expenses scandal.

He said: "Those of us who were here at the time remember how difficult it was to restore the reputation of this House after the expenses scandal.

"Is there not a wider issue here about how the public look upon what they describe as the political class and about the feeling, justified or otherwise, that we are all greedy, on the make, and so on?

"We have to be careful that we are not tarred with the same brush."

Labour has pressed ministers over George Osborne's new role at the London Evening Standard, insisting new business appointments should not be announced before they have been considered by the Government's advisory committee.

Shadow Cabinet Office minister Andrew Gwynne said former ministers must get advice from the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (Acoba) before announcing any new appointment, according to the ministerial code.

Labour deputy leader Tom Watson has said Mr Osborne would be expected to seek to influence ministers on media policy in his new role, and Mr Hancock should recuse himself from any matters relating to the Evening Standard, or ask to be moved to another Government department.
