The High Street unit opposite Cumberland House Surgery could be split up into smaller units, after plans were put forward to Stafford Borough Council.

If approved the ground floor shop is earmarked to become two shops, while the first and second floors of the property will become apartments. A new outer staircase is also proposed to provide access to the apartments.

The application submitted to Stafford Borough Council described the unit as "vacant unused space".

A design and access statement said: "It is deemed that the conversion of the existing upper floors to residential will provide a sustainable use for the site.

"The site is currently not in use and has experienced long periods of closure in the past. The site will provide residential dwellings to the area, bringing in additional business to the surrounding properties whilst having little visual impact to the building’s current appearance."

Stone Town Council is set to have its say on the application at a planning committee meeting tomorrow.
