Man dies after being hit by train in Stafford

A man has died after he was hit by a train in Stafford.

Police were called to School Lane, in Moss Pit, at about 1.35pm on Saturday. .

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and West Midlands Ambulance Service were also in attendance.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "Sadly, the man later died of his injuries.

"An investigation into what happened is now under way, with formal identification of the man involved yet to take place."

Rail services were delayed and cancelled after the incident.

Travellers heading between Penkridge and Stafford were forced to make other arrangements after the West Coast Mainline was closed between the two stations.

Rail replacement bus services were running between Wolverhampton and Crewe and other train services were accepting tickets for London Northwestern passengers.

The line was subsequently reopened at 3.15pm

A London Northwestern Railway spokesperson said: "Services through Stafford were subject to delays and cancellations on Saturday afternoon while the emergency services dealt with an incident on the railway.

"Any passengers whose journeys were delayed by 15 minutes or more can claim compensation via the Delay Repay scheme."
