Artist creates 'medieval' sculptures during lockdown
An artist from Staffordshire has been keeping himself busy during lockdown by crafting 'stone sculptures' out of clay.
Paul Moran, aged 54, lives in Stafford and works as a freelance artist and teacher.
He originally comes from Stone and spent about 20 years abroad teaching art – but has recently returned to the area and now lives with his 17-year-old son in Stafford.
His sculptures have proved popular, and Paul is now thinking of making more to sell.
He said: "I was looking at my garden and thought it would be nice to have a plaque or something, but going round garden centres everything looks a bit twee.
"So I thought how I could make them look like carved stone without getting my hammer out and attacking blocks of stone – I decided to make them from clay and poured concrete. They seemed to look pretty good so I carried on. I really enjoy doing them in my garden."
The sculptures take Paul about one or two days to do, if he's not in a hurry, and he themes them around British horror folk art.
He added: "I'm just trying not to put them all round the house now! They're just for me at the moment but I'd like to make a Facebook page and sell them.
"They have a bit of a medieval theme – as it's been a bit of a medieval year with the virus and everything.
"There are a lot of artists living in Stafford so I thought I'd share what I'd been doing and hope to see what they have as well. It's just been something to keep me going in lockdown but I've really enjoyed it."
