Stafford delivery driver named Britain's best after finding woman in labour
They say curry can help induce labour – but one kind-hearted delivery driver had the shock of his life when he came to the aid of pregnant lady.
During a busy, routine Friday night, Mohammed Miah knocked on the door of a house in Wildwood, Staffordshire, only to be greeted by a child in distress.
Mo, aged 29, who works for The Island Restaurant, in Stafford, realised something was wrong and when the young boy said his mother was in pain he went in to investigate.
"He told me his mum was not well and I knew then I couldn't just leave him," said Mo, who lives in Wednesbury.
"I wasn't going to just leave the food and drive off, leaving his kid on his own.
"I went upstairs to see what was happening and it clear she was in labour, which was quite a shock.
"I had no idea what was going before I went upstairs but then I tried to calm her and her son down."
Not only did Mo call an ambulance, he also waited with the boy, served him his curry and stayed until everything was under control.
He even found time to call the restaurant to get his other two takeaways collected by fellow drivers, ensuring no customers went without.
Appreciation
All these actions saw Mo crowned Best Takeaway Delivery Driver in Britain last week during a lavish ceremony in London, as part of the British Takeaway Awards.
The lady, who gave birth to a healthy baby in July, has since moved from the area but still found time to pop into the restaurant and show Mo her appreciation.
"She bought me a bottle of aftershave, which was really nice," he said. "I last saw her around October time but she has since moved away from the area.
"I wanted to tell her about the award win but the house she was living in is now up for sale."
Shaz Miah, manager at The Island Restaurant, who is no relation, said his staff always did what they could for their customers.
"We weren't expecting to win the award but it was a crazy night," he said.
"It's all about going above and beyond for out customers but still, we weren't expecting Mo to win.
"It all happened on a Friday night too, so it was very busy. He had three takeaways with him but still contacted the restaurant so another driver could deliver them.
"It was nice for the lady to come back and give him gift – but more importantly that the mother and baby were healthy.
"We have about 10 members of staff, who all do their best for the customers."
