Wombourne family raise £1,000 for NHS with marathon walk
A young brother and sister have raised more than £1,000 for a Covid-19 crisis appeal after walking a marathon in a week around their home village.
Emma Garland, aged 38, said her children Isabelle, aged nine, and Joshua, aged six, wanted to fundraise for the Dudley Group NHS Trust Covid-19 Crisis Appeal to help people suffering from coronavirus.
The Wombourne family, along with dad Darren, also 38, had been enjoying their daily walks during lockdown and exploring places they had never been before
And the two children wanted to use their walks to help people who need extra support.
Emma, 38, said: "Since lockdown began we have had lots of fun going on our daily walks. We are all loving our walks and Isabelle and Joshua thought that while we were walking we could be raising money to help the poorly, sick people and the doctors and nurses who are doing an amazing job at our local hospital Russell’s Hall, in Dudley.
"In the past, Joshua has spent some time at the hospital – he had bronchiolitis when he was five weeks old and also suffers from croup – he has been taken to the hospital on blue lights a few times – so he knows first hand what a great job they do for everyone.
"So we decided that we were going to walk a marathon in a week to help raise some money."
More Covid-19 coverage:
The family have already raised more than £1,100 for the cause, after originally only aiming for £100. They decided to walk the marathon all together over seven days but ended up completing it in five days – walking around four to seven miles each day. Altogether they walked 27.8 miles.
"We're so proud of them," added Emma. "The kids are so pleased and always want to check the Just Giving website to see the donations. We've had neighbours pop money through the door too. It's been so lovely. They've both told their teachers too – they go to Westfield Primary."
