Tribute concert for Brewood teacher who made bet with Sir Jack
A special tribute concert is being held to honour a former school headmistress who famously won a bet with Sir Jack Hayward – helping to build a new sports hall.
Sister Helen Weston was headteacher of St Dominic's Grammar School, in Brewood, between 1978 and 1990, and died in December at the age of 93.
A tribute concert will be held at the school on January 30, with proceeds going to the music department. The school chapel will also be renamed the Sister Helen Chapel during the evening.
Peter McNabb, headteacher, said Sister Helen's death had been felt by many people who remembered her commitment and contribution to the success of the school.
He said: "Sister Helen was instrumental in making St Dominic’s what it is today and it is fitting that the school pays its own special tribute to her,” he said.
“We have decided to hold the Sister Helen Weston Tribute Concert at the school, with proceeds from ticket sales going to the music department to continue her love for music that she had in the school.
“As well as the concert, we will also be renaming the school chapel as The Sister Helen Chapel and will unveil a plaque during the evening.
"Our concert, organised by Mr Hall and Mrs Perks, will take place in the Peakman Hall at 7pm and the evening will give the opportunity to hear the Senior and Prep Choirs, soloists, small ensembles and bands. We will have pupils from every year group from Year 1 upwards taking part."
Tickets for the concert cost £5 and are available by calling the school on 01902 850248.
