Illuminated lights approved for Rugeley convenience store
A Rugeley convenience store has been given the green light to install new illuminated shop signs despite an objection from town councillors.
Cannock Chase Council’s planning committee approved the proposals for the One Stop branch in Elmore Lane.
Members were told that Rugeley Town Council had objected to the application because the shop is near residential properties and there were concerns that residents may be affected by the illuminated signs.
Committee member Councillor Andrea Muckley said: “I think we should be encouraging businesses but I’m concerned about a lit advertisement board that is going to be 2.6m high when there are flats over the shops. I think it is going to impact on amenity and cause light pollution.
“People can see it is a One Stop. I’m not convinced they need the illuminated sign.”
But a condition has been put forward requiring the illuminated signs to be switched off between 11pm and 7pm, the committee heard.
Councillor Alan Dudson said: “It’s on the side of a main road – I don’t think the light is going to affect it. I think it needs our encouragement.
Councillor Paul Fisher said: “I think we should give it full support to encourage shops like this to reopen.”
